Spring Has Sprung!

The first grade music program went off without a hitch, as they say. The students sang exceptionally well, and focused on the leader like professionals. I am so looking forward to hearing them next year as second graders. The second grade concerts typically take place in November.

Second graders, meanwhile, have been using the xylophones to become familiar with the eight-note scale and to play simple songs such as Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star, Are You Sleeping? and Kye Kye Kule. After spring break, they will explore some new rhythms in written form, and reinforce their knowledge of the musical scale. Simple sight-singing using songs that focus on do, re, mi, so and la is the goal by the end of the year.

First graders will be following along the same lines, exploring the so and mi steps of the scale and reading basic rhythms, while listening, moving and playing to music. Kindergarteners continue to distinguish high and low, loud and soft, fast and slow, steady beat and no steady beat, as they listen, move and play to music.

First Grade Concert Coming up on March 9th

On Wednesday, March 9th, at 7:00, the first graders will be performing in their first full-length concert together. The theme of the music program is animals, and the students are learning some wonderful songs for this event. A copy of the lyrics will be sent home soon. Also, look for a request for speakers for the program. All students who volunteer with their parents' consent are given a small speaking part to memorize and say. The whole event will be a memorable one.

Second Grade Music Program Coming Soon! NOVEMBER 10TH AT 7:00 PM

This week I will send home another copy of the lyrics for our upcoming music program. If you are one of those people who never loses anything, feel free to send them back. I am in the process of learning how to upload MP3 files onto my blog spot page. If you see them here, that means I succeeded. The recordings are a little rough, made when students were just learning the songs in some cases. But you should be able to hear the melody of each song clearly enough to follow.

So far no luck with the MP3 files!

The first grade music program is scheduled for Wednesday, March 9th at 7:00 pm.
Stay tuned in for more information on these dates!

Welcome!

Welcome to a new school year, students and parents! We will be spending the first few days going over classroom procedures, getting acquainted or reacquainted and and tuning up our musical skills. Then we will launch into our curriculum, which though it is very specific in its intent, still provides us with lots of fun. Music is fun, and self-expression of one kind or another is at the heart of our self-esteem and ability to feel connected with those around us.
